Hiking trip to Stauns Fjord starting from Sælvig Harbor
Bisgaard Mark – Stauns Fjord – Alstrup – Toftebjerg
The journey begins at Sælvig Harbor, where you walk down to the beach behind the ticket machines for car check-in. Follow the beach northwards. Sælvig Bay is an almost seven-kilometer-long beach on the west coast of Samsø. The water is always shallow, and during low tide, children can wade out quite far. There are plenty of sandworms that you can try to dig up. The water is clear, and there is usually a beautiful sandy bottom and sandy beach.
Shortly after Bisgård Mark, you go up to the path running alongside the road and follow it until you reach Lille Vorbjerg. From here, you have the option to take a detour of about 1 km, where you can climb the hill “Store Vorbjerg.” Here, you have a beautiful view over Nordøen and Stavns Fjord.
Turn right onto Staunsvej, located just after Sælvigbugtens Camping. Walk through the village along the road to the airfield. If you wish to visit the small boat harbor on the southern outskirts of the village, turn left onto Kastaniealléen.
The 150-meter-long dirt road leads down to the old harbor, which today serves as a boat dock with moored small boats in long rows. A series of stones extend into the water, and just north of these, remains of a pier structure have been found, dating back to the 8th century – presumably there is a temporal coincidence between this Viking harbor and Kanhave Canal. From the harbor, there is a view over Stavns Fjord, which is a stone-filled shallow area with many small grass and tree-covered islets.
Return the same way and continue the journey to the left towards the airfield. Walk along the airfield and past the causeway to Gammelholm. Enjoy the splendid view of the islets; the largest islet in Stauns Fjord, right ahead, is called Hjortsholm. Follow the path along the water until you return to Flyvervej. Shortly after, turn right towards Alstrup. On the left-hand side along the way, you’ll pass Stenstuen – a small mound with a dolmen.
In Alstrup, there are lots of exciting fields, including the island’s largest vineyard, as well as a large apple and pear orchard. You will also pass an organic farm with a wide variety of vegetables. In Alstrup, turn right onto the paved road towards Toftebjerg.
In Toftebjerg, turn left onto Smedegade, which later becomes Hellemosevej. Follow it all the way out to Sælvig Bay, then turn left and follow Havvejen back.
Turn right at Sælvig and follow the road for the last nearly 2 km to Sælvig Harbor, where the journey ends.
